What vaccinations does my cat need?

Short answer

Kittens need a series of core vaccines starting around 6 to 8 weeks, boostered every few weeks until about 16 weeks, then a booster at a year. Adult cats need periodic boosters, usually every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine and your vet. The core vaccines protect against panleukopenia, feline herpesvirus, calicivirus, and rabies.

The core vaccines

FVRCP, a combined vaccine against feline viral rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), calicivirus, and panleukopenia, three serious, common diseases.
Rabies, required by law in many places and important wherever rabies exists.
FeLV (feline leukaemia) is recommended for kittens and for cats that go outdoors or live with FeLV-positive cats.

A typical schedule

Kittens: FVRCP starting at about 6 to 8 weeks, repeated every 3 to 4 weeks until about 16 weeks. Rabies usually once at around 12 to 16 weeks.
One year: a booster of the kitten vaccines.
Adults: boosters every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine, local law, and lifestyle.
